Skincare has become part of our everyday routine. We cleanse, moisturize and protect our skin without waiting for it to become extremely dry or uncomfortable first.
So why should paw care be any different?
Your dog’s paw pads are skin too, just specially designed to handle everything from sidewalks and grass to changing weather and daily adventures. While they’re naturally tough, they can still become dry, rough and in need of a little extra care.
Think of paw care like skincare
A good skincare routine doesn’t have to involve ten different steps. Neither does your dog’s.
For most dogs, a simple routine comes down to three things: clean, check and moisturize.
1. Clean
Just like we wash away dirt and buildup from our skin, paws benefit from gentle cleaning when they need it.
After muddy, snowy or particularly messy walks, wipe away dirt, salt and other residue. Avoid unnecessarily over-washing, which can contribute to dryness.
2. Check
We notice when our own skin suddenly feels different, and it’s worth doing the same with our dogs.
Take a few seconds to look at their paw pads while grooming or after a walk. Knowing what your dog’s paws normally look and feel like makes it easier to notice changes.
3. Moisturize
We reach for moisturizer when our hands feel dry. Paw balm serves a similar purpose for dry paw pads.
Covetail Daily Paw Protection Balm combines beeswax, shea butter, plant oils, vitamin E, aloe and oat extracts to help moisturize and condition dry paws.
Apply a small amount and massage it gently into the paw pads as needed.
Their routine can change with the seasons
You probably don’t treat your skin exactly the same way in July as you do in January. Your dog’s paw-care needs can change too.
Cold, dry winters may call for more frequent moisturizing, especially with exposure to snow and sidewalk salt. During summer, attention shifts toward hot surfaces and keeping paws clean after outdoor adventures.
The goal isn’t to create an elaborate routine. It’s simply to pay attention and give their paws a little extra care when they need it.
Paw care is everyday care
We tend to think about our dogs’ grooming in terms of baths, brushing, teeth and nails. Paw care deserves a place in that routine too.
It only takes a few moments, but those paws carry them through every walk, every adventure and every excited run to the front door.
